A Visit with the Brothers

Both David's brother TJ and my brother Rhett were in town this Saturday. With the rain coming down consistently and David's roommate Bill needing to study we decided to go bowling.

I took a couple pictures of the occasion...

What I don't have a picture of is how sore I am from bowling! And becuase I will expose myself so that others can get a good laugh...my left rear end cheek muscle is the most painful part! How?

I also don't have any picutres of the Mexican fiesta we had at David's apartment. I cooked an enchilada casserole. David made quacomole. We had queso and refried beans...and lots of fun friends and family.

Sunday morning TJ wend off to Costa Rica and Rhett back to Arkansas. It was fun while it lasted :)

"In Sickness and In Health"

I have recently seen this simple line many couples repeat during a wedding ceremony face to face. It has touched me deeply. SO deeply that I cannot help but share my thoughts.

I have seen my own parents care for each other when sickness has stricken them.

I have seen David's grandmother care for her husband (papaw) as he battles Pancreatic cancer.

I have seen my brother in-law comfort my sister as she struggled with a miscarriage.

And by no means do I think any one couple displays unselfish love better than another..but I have been overwhelmed with thoughts of this story.

David and I were blessed again to be able to go see James Taylor this past Friday. Fortunately for David and I we both LOVE James and have place JT as our #1 musician :) When a co-worker bought extra tickets to the sold out show, we couldn't help but scrounge up some $$ and go to the show.

We got there early so we could get a good parking spot and find our seats with no problems. We had great seats. We had only two seats between us and the outer isle. This changed at about 10 min before the show. The maintenance men came and removed the last seat on our row and created a flat surface for a wheelchair to set up shop for the concert.

I was very entertained at just watching the men remove a theatre seat...crazy.

Anyway, a few minutes later a husband and wife about the age of 60 made their way to these seats. The wife appeared to have had some sort of accident, stroke, tragedy that has taken her once "normal" life to one in a high-tech wheel chair. This wheel chair had become her life support. It had a feeding tube installed, head rests, arm rests, breathing tubes etc. Her eyes were open but she could not move any of her body parts not even a hand to use the remote on the chair to move the chair.

Her husband did everything for her that the chair could not. He "drives" the chair where it needs to go. He wipes the drool off her chin. He prepares the food for the feeding tube. He drapes a beautiful pink pashmina over her tube so she is not embarrassed. He carries 3 bags full of supplies for his wife and for the maintenance of the chair.

Throughout the entire show, this sweet husband held her hand and sang her the lyrics to every song. "Whenever I see her smiling face, I have to smile myself because I love you."

He leaned over to kiss her cheeks when all the other couples around were cuddling up to these great lyrics.

He remained seated when everyone else stood up to dance to the music as not to make his wife feel alone.

He selflessly cared for his wife...and I could not stop crying over it. Even now as I tell this story I am fighting back tears.

That husband could be bitter and exhausted. He could be angry and lazy. But instead he loves his bride. He said numerous times to her "I am so glad you are here." He proudly told the women sitting behind us this was his wife.

I am kicking myself that I did not speak to this man. He sat right next to me. But I could not bring myself to talk to him because every time I opened my mouth...I had tears streaming down my face. I wanted to tell him thank you. Thank you for showing me true love and for showing me the meaning of those vows in a new light.

"...for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part."

As we were leaving the auditorium, he had moved his wife out of the way so people could get out. He stood there with his wife with the biggest smile as he sang "Whenever I see your smiling face."

Hello there friend...

Well it is safe to say I have taken quite a sabbatical from blogging!! I have lots of things I want to say and it will take me a while to get caught up... the two closest women in my life had birthdays while I took my break and I want to dedicate some time for each of them ( My sister and My mother).

But for some brief highlights over the past 3 months...

David and I have taken the next step and placed membership with a local church. This has been a continuous prayer for our relationship. We desired so greatly to find a church home and serve together, begin building relationships with the community, and just laying the foundation together BEFORE we get married! We have just really heard God calling us to make this a priority now.

We have been visiting Park Cities Presbyterian Church or PCPC as we call it for a couple of months and love it.. more on this later!

I must show you the beautiful church! It is not the reason we chose to visit...but it is worth sharing.

The amazing choir at the Christmas concert

I have also been super busy being the Maid of Honor for my dear friends, Kent and Lindsey's wedding in May. I have been going to her showers, throwing them showers, helping them move into their new place. Busy, busy, busy!

A picture of Kent and Linds from a recent shower.

I was recently apart of one of my best friend, Melissa's engagement. She will be marrying one of my closest guy friends, Jonathan or Jdub as I know him on November 7th!!! I am so thrilled and excited as I will also be her Maid of Honor!

This is a picture of us girls after we (Maggie, David, and I) surprised her by driving in from Dallas.

David took me to my first ballet ever for Valentine's day... I have seen the Nutcracker but that is the only one. We got to see Swan Lake at Bass Hall in Ft. Worth and I literally had tears roll down my cheek. I have never seen something so beautiful. I went home that night and tried some ballet moves out...and was sore for a week! I miss dancing so much!

Here is a picture of David and I...freezing cold...outside the Bass Hall.

I took a couple days off work to visit my parents in CO and was able to work it out so that Shawna and Kate were there at the same time! :) If I could quit my job and become a full-time auntie, I would. It is such a joy to see Kate grow up and to build a connection with her. She loves her auntie. After she woke up one morning and started playing with me she looked at mommy and said bye bye mommie! I adore her!

This is Kate holding auntie's hand...she did not want to let go!

Playing with Playdoh

Watching Elmo with her pink headphones...adorable!

That's it for now...I am sure there is so much more but it will come in waves. I missed everyone.. come back for more!

Christmas Time

Christmas time is my favorite time of the year. I love it regardless of weather....although I love it when it is cold in December. It is 74 degrees right now in Dallas!! Crazy. I love decorating my home and seeing other decorations. I love listening to Christmas music. I have had it on the one radio channel that plays continuous Christmas music. I listen to Christmas music online at work (www.pandora.com) I love Christmas parties. I love cooking Christmas treats. I love spending time with family whoever and whenever we can be together. I love how everyone decides to take part in charities during this time of the year. I only wish people would say Merry Christmas...none of this Happy Holidays business.

I am about to pick up Shawna, David, and Kate from the airport. I take Mamma Two to the airport on Sunday and Rhett and I fly out on Tuesday. I love it....Holiday travels!

I thought you all might enjoy these pictures as much as I do. I love them.

Merry Christmas friends.

Happy Birthday Melissa!

This past weekend was another friend's birthday. Melissa! I met Melissa at Baylor after pledging the same sorority. I remember seeing her around campus before we pledged and I thought she was so confident even as a freshman. She and I stood in line near each other due to our last names and we slowly got to know each other.

For all those who know her, or have even had the pleasure of talking to her, know she is the most positive person. Melissa will have the worst day, and just laugh it off. She will say something so profound like, "I learned so much about myself today."

She is a great listener. I like to talk and hear the sound of my voice, and Melissa listens with an open ear time and time again.

She is an encourager. She will encourage and compliment a tree. Seriously she always finds a way to make everyone around her feel great. I needed this time and time again. It is so refreshing to know people can take the time to give a kind word to someone else.

She is eloquent. She will say the everyday things very eloquently. I can't even type it.

She loves the Lord. She is devoted to living a life glorifying to God. She is a great example as a friend and confidant.

She is a wonderful friend. She is loyal, and kind. She is one that I am so blessed to have in my life.

Happy Birthday Melissa!!

No Pollution

Being that I now live in Dallas, I do not go to Rockwall often. It is weird not having anything there anymore. My best friend, Caroline lives there, but we get to see each other quite a bit in Dallas. This past weekend I took a babysitting job in Rockwall that Caroline has. She was out of town, and knew I am needing some extra cash these days. It was so weird being around a 12 year old boy. Because I am not around them often, I am not sure what is normal or not-normal...but this boy was very special. He is so smart. He had intelligent conversations with me about the election and certain issues. He tries to understand his mother's illness, Multiple Sclerosis. He tries to understand why his father left his mother for his secretary when he was 5. He tries to understand why his Dad didn't come to his baptism when he was 7. He tries to understand why his father has not met his teachers until this year(6th grade). He tries to understand why his mom wants to date other men, when he thinks he can take care of her.

Honestly, I am so glad I took this job and I will actually be watching him again this weekend. He has gone through so much and he is only 12. I was reminded there are so many things that can pollute our lives, and yet this 12 year old is so forgiving, kind, funny, caring, willing to help, loving, creative, and young.

I enjoyed being a kid again. We went to see Madagascar 2...thank goodness these animated films have great one liners. We watched the Disney channel, played games, played with Lego's...really I was a kid.

On Sunday though we decided to go to Lake Pointe Church. He and his parents were members there before the divorce, and he said he and his mom don't go there much anymore. He was completely fine going with me though, and I am so glad we did.

Pastor Steve discussed how every year he challenges the members to put Christ in the center of the Holidays, but he does this during the holidays. He decided this year to challenge us to do this before the holidays hit. He said something that has really stuck with me, Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays we have not polluted. It is still about family and relationships. They set up a Thanksgiving Wall for people to write what they are thankful for and what God has blessed their lives with as a reminder of how special this holiday is. It really is so sad how all the stores have Christmas decorations up and gifts displayed. Many people have already decorated their house for Christmas, hung their lights and everything. I am not saying everyone who has decorated is not going to enjoy Thanksgiving, but many of us are looking forward to Christmas so much we are missing how wonderful and fulfilling Thanksgiving can be.

I love Christmas. Absolutely love it. I could listen to Christmas music all year long. I could leave the decorations up. I really do love it. However I do think Steve is so right. We have polluted Christmas with all this stuff. I am challenging myself to not only stop polluting Christmas, but to glorify God with a day of giving Thanks and being with family.

Even the sweet little boy went to the Thanksgiving Wall and wrote down how thankful he is for his mom and his cat. Even just these small moments are so rewarding to say Thanks be to God.
